Description
About a thousand years ago--give or take 993 years--in '98, I did a painting entitled "Cold Sun." It was a fairly unremarkably little piece of a chick with a facial tattoo and a staff with a skull on it, part of my "I Want To Be Larry Elmore When I Grow Up" period. It's not the worst painting out of that era by a long shot--there are things from those days that haunt my nightmares*--but it's generally pretty unremarkable, and it dropped out of my brain for years until I was putting up the new website and people had expressed a desire to see some of the ancient art, and it was one of the ones still on my hard drive. And I was lying on the couch trying to nap through the sound of the woodpeckers trying to drill through the vinyl siding, and thought in a vague sort of way "I wonder what revisiting some of my old paintings, in a gearworld setting, would look like?" And lightning struck my brain, and I said "Heeeey..." and got up and began sketching. It isn't the painting I did seven years ago and in a sense, it's not exactly the painting I'd probably do today--I've mostly gotten over the need to stick a skull staff in everything--but I was pleased enough. And reflecting either my changed aesthetic sensibility, or perhaps the extra thirty pounds I've gained since I was twenty-one, she's got some hopefully realistic pudge. (The downside to this sort of thing is that inevitably someone--generally a young man who has never actually seen a nude woman in the flesh, although we do get all kinds-- sees fit to type "OMG! fat! gross!" This no longer bothers me, and in fact, it's kinda fun to count time-to-horror...)
And it's a Gearworld painting, which was nice, because I've been fretting over trying to do those. It is digital. I will be selling the jumbo 13 x 19 prints, limited edition of 25, for $50, and I've got the standard smalls for $10. I'm also looking into some even larger prints, possibly an edition of 5, possibly for if I ever get gallery ambitions, but I'm not sure yet on that, or whether they'll be available on-line, or what.
Oh, Painter 7, wacom tablet, it took two obsessive days, and my aching right arm stinks of mint from all the crap I've been rubbing on it to hold together long enough to finish.
*You know the ones where you're being pursued by ravenous zombies carrying your old paintings? Okay, maybe not...

I love paintings and photos of non-model type women. I love the olde crone look of wisdom that comes through and so much more. Technique and composition wise I know you can push this further and make more details but I can see this is a point where the artist wonders, "Should I?" This is a great work of art.
